Our forgiveness

For Your name’s sake, O Lord, pardon our iniquity; for they are great. Psalm 25:11

It’s for the honor of Your name.

It’s for Your reputation Lord that You forgive.

It’s not because of anything we’ve done.

It’s not based on our performance.

Every day we prove to ourselves we need Your forgiveness

To us who work not, but believes on You that justifies the ungodly,

Our faith is counted for righteousness. Rom 4:5

When the President pardons someone, he is not saying they are innocent.

He is simply, often without reason or explanation, setting them free.

But while they may now be free, they are no less guilty.

There is absolutely nothing the President can do about guilt.

God’s pardons are vastly different. God takes those with mountains of sins

Sins to many to list & wipes their slate clean.

Then God views them as righteous as His spotless Son Jesus Christ.

Ken Gross

That Man of Calvary has won my heart from me,

And died to set me free, blessed Man of Calvary.

M. P. Ferguson

And the peace of God which surpasses all understanding

will guard our hearts & minds through Christ Jesus.

A new identity

Our old way of life was nailed to the cross with Christ,

This is a decisive end to that sin-miserable life—

Sin is no longer calling the shots in our life!

Are you kidding me? Do we believe this is true:

If we get included in Christ’s sin-conquering death,

we are also included in his life-saving resurrection.

We know that when Jesus was raised from the dead

it was a signal of the end of death-as-the-end.

Never again will death have the last word.

When Jesus died, he took sin down with Him,

He is now alive he brings God down to us.

Sin now speaks a dead language that means nothing to us;

Our new language is God speak

We only hear God’s Word now!

We only respond to God’s voice!

That’s why His Word is what we memorize & meditate on

in fact we hang on every word He says.

We don’t listen to the lies in our head anymore!

We don’t get strung out by what others say about us!

We are dead to sin & alive to God.

We don’t give sin a vote in the way we conduct our lives.

We don’t give it the time of day.

We don’t even connect with that old way of life.

We avoid the old stuff. We don’t hang there anymore

Our whole heart is full-time for Jesus

We’ve been raised from the dead!—

Sin can’t tell us how to live now.

We’re not living under that old tyranny any longer.

We’re living in the freedom of God. …

Romans 6:6-14 paraphrased

We’re to change our sense of identity,

We’re to establish new thoughts about who we are,

Our new view of ourselves is dead to sin and alive to Christ.

And the more we see this, the more we will dethrone sin & weaken its power.

In the book Atomic Habits, James Clear

depicts the three levels at which change can occur as layers of an onion:

Layer 1. Identity:

This is the centre of the onion & involves changing our beliefs,

our worldview, our self-image, our judgments.

Layer 2. Processes:

The next layer is changing your habits and systems. This is the habits layer.

Layer 3. Outcomes:

The outside layer is changing your results. This is the goals layer.

He explains,

Outcomes are about what you get.

Processes are about what you do.

Identity is about what you believe pages 30-31

each of these levels are involved in change but most people start with goals

(what they want to achieve/what they want to do)

rather than identity

(what they believe/who they are).

Clear argues,

the more we start with identity, who we want to become, the more change we will see.

“It’s hard to change your habits

if you never change the underlying beliefs

that led to your past behavior.

You have a new goal and a new plan,

but you haven’t changed who you are” page 31

The key to change, then, is identity change.

For example, instead of saying,

“I’m trying to stop smoking,” say, “I’m not a smoker.”

“True behavior change is identity change.

You might start a habit because of motivation,

but the only reason you’ll stick with one is that it becomes part of your identity…

Improvements are only temporary until they become part of who you are” page 34

The goal is not to stop or start something, it’s to become someone.

Behaviors are a reflection of our identity.

“Research has shown that once a person believes

in a particular aspect of their identity,

they are more likely to act in alignment with that belief” page 34

This connection between identity & habit

also raises serious questions about identifying by saying,

I’m an alcoholic. Or I’m an angry person. Or, I’m unchangeable.

That’s not a core part of our identity.

“Becoming the best version of yourself

requires us to continuously edit our beliefs,

and to upgrade and expand our identity” page 36

God is awesome

How could one who created such an infinite variety of intricate designs of life be a drag?

How could sin which brings anguish & death be so compelling & attractive?

Comfort in the Lord

If I were in your shoes, I’d go straight to God, I’d throw myself on the mercy of God.

After all, he’s famous for great & unexpected acts; there’s no end to his surprises.

He gives rain, for instance, across the wide earth, sends water to irrigate the fields.

He raises up the down-and-out, He gives firm footing to those sinking in grief.

He aborts the schemes of conniving crooks, so that none of their plots come to term.

He catches the know-it-alls in their conspiracies— all that intricate intrigue swept out with the trash!

Suddenly they’re disoriented, plunged into darkness; they can’t see to put one foot in front of the other.

But the downtrodden are saved by God, saved from the murderous plots, saved from the iron fist.

And so the poor continue to hope, while injustice is bound and gagged.

“So, what a blessing when God steps in & corrects us!

Don’t despise the discipline of Almighty God!

True, he wounds, but he also dresses the wound; the same hand that hurts us, heals us.

From one disaster after another he delivers us; no matter what the calamity,

the evil can’t touch us-

In famine, he’ll keep us from starving,

in war, he’ll keep us from being gutted by the sword.

You’ll be protected from vicious gossip & live fearless through any catastrophe.

You’ll shrug off disaster & famine & stroll fearlessly among wild animals.

You’ll be on good terms with rocks & mountains; wild animals will become your good friends.

You’ll know that your place on earth is safe, you’ll look over your goods & find nothing amiss.

You’ll see your children grow up, your family lovely & wholesome as orchard grass.

You’ll arrive at your grave ripe with many good years, like sheaves of golden grain at harvest.

Yes, this is the way things are— God’s word of honor!

Take it to heart and you won’t go wrong.” …

Love wins

Above all, keep fervent in your love for one another, because love covers a multitude of sins.

1 Peter 4:8

Hatred stirs up dissension, but love covers all transgressions.

Proverbs 10:12

Whoever conceals an offense promotes love, but he who brings it up separates friends.

Proverbs 17:9

Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud.

1 Corinthians 13:4

consider this: Whoever turns a sinner from the error of his way

will save his soul from death and cover over a multitude of sins.

James 5:20

Since you have purified your souls by obedience to the truth

so that you have a genuine love for your brothers,

love one another deeply, from a pure heart.

1 Peter 1:22

And above all these things put on love, which is the bond of perfectness.

Colossians 3:14

Warm Breezes

Awake, O north wind & come south wind; blow on our garden,

that the spices in them may flow out.

Song of Solomon 4:16

“There are those spans of time in our walk with the Lord that ‘winter weather’ descends on our soul.”

What is needed is a “gentle thaw,” the warming influence of God’s Spirit.

We hear Him tell us to draw near to Him & He will draw near to us.

James 4:8

He does not want us shackled by our struggles,

so He sends southern warm breezes of compassion

that lead to greening meadows

where we can again enjoy the sunshine in our souls.

E. Dyck

Blessed quietness, holy quietness;

What assurance to the soul!

On the stormy sea, He speaks peace to me;

How the billows cease to roll!

Don’t Stress

Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer & supplication

with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God.

Phil 4:6

Don’t fret or worry. Instead of worrying, pray.

Let petitions & praises shape your worries into prayers,

Let God know your concerns.

Before you know it, a sense of God’s wholeness,

everything coming together for good,

will come & settle us down.

It’s wonderful what happens when Christ

displaces worry at the center of our life.

The message

Worry & fret is distracting,

anxiety harms our ability to prioritize,

When we’re stressing we’re untrusting & discontent

Anxiety is a stress response & can give us physical symptoms –

headaches, nausea, tense muscles, trembling, sweating, heart palpitations,

backache, Sleeplessness, agitation, shrill reactions & the list goes on & on.

The psalmist feared God’s being silent or forsaking him.

He was pummeled by the scorn of man.

But he always found the silver lining to his worry –

His silver lining was gratitude, so he was thankful in everything

His silver lining was praise & worship, so he exalted & adored The Lord Jesus

His silver lining was trust, so he cast all his cares, burdens & stresses on God

His silver lining were promises, so he became a remembrancer

In the royal court the King appointed remembrancers.

The job of the remembrancer was to remind the King

of all of the promises He had made to his people.

This motivated the King to follow through & be faithful to his promises.

God wants us to remind Him of His promises

God wants us to remind Him of Jesus (so we come to Him in Jesus name)

The Good Samaritan treated the wounds of the man beaten by robbers Luke 10:25-37

Paul commended Timothy because he cared for the welfare & needs of others Phil 2:19-23

Jesus uses us to care for others & He uses others to care for us.

JESUS CARES… WHEN WE ARE BURDENED

YES HE CARES… WHEN WE’RE ALL ALONE

YES HE CARES… WHEN WE’RE IN MISERY

OH, HE CARES… HE CARES FOR US

AND HE CARES… WHEN WE’RE DISCOURAGED

HE’S CONCERNED… SO EARNESTLY

JESUS CARES… WHEN WE’RE IN SORROW

WHEN OUR PAIN… IS HARD TO BEAR

AND HE CARES… ABOUT EACH SITUATION

IT’S SO GOOD TO KNOW… HE’S THERE

WHEN OUR DAYS… ARE DARK AS NIGHT

HE’LL BE THERE… TO MAKE IT RIGHT

When darkness veils His lovely face

Learning God’s mind & feeling what He has in His heart for us is what we discover in His Word.

As we muse on Him we feel our own weakness & lean on His strength.

Whatever it may cost us to feel our weakness & our fragility.

Whatever it may cost to make us dependent & trusting in Jesus is worth the cost to find Him as our all.

Whatever develops a Passion for Him

Whatever builds in us the desire for His glorification

Whatever causes us to see Jesus infinite worth

That should be our joy & crown to be lost in Awe & Worship & Wonder of Our Lord Jesus

My hope is built on nothing less

Than Jesus’ blood & righteousness;

I dare not trust the sweetest frame,

But wholly lean on Jesus’ name.

When darkness veils His lovely face,

I rest on His unchanging grace;

In every high & stormy gale,

My anchor holds within the veil.

His oath, His covenant, His blood

Support me in the whelming flood;

When all around my soul gives way,

He then is all my hope and stay.

When He shall come with trumpet sound,

Oh, may I then in Him be found;

Dressed in His righteousness alone,

Faultless to stand before the throne.

On Christ, the solid Rock, I stand;

All other ground is sinking sand,

All other ground is sinking sand.
