He’s with us

“Any simpleton can follow the narrow path in the light:

faith’s rare wisdom enables us to march on in the dark with infallible accuracy,

since she places her hand in that of her Great Guide.”

Friends

God is our friend.

Would we be in error to claim Him as our closest friend?

We need our friend the most when we are in trouble

We need our friend when we are in over our heads!!!

We appreciate a friend best when we need Him.

And we always need Him!

DON’T EVER FEEL HOPELESSLY TRAPPED

GOD then told Elijah, “Get out of here, and fast.

Head east & hide out at the Kerith Ravine on the other side of the Jordan River.

You can drink fresh water from the brook;

I’ve ordered the ravens to feed you.”

Elijah obeyed GOD’s orders.

He went and camped in the Kerith canyon on the other side of the Jordan.

And sure enough, ravens brought him his meals, both breakfast and supper, and he drank from the brook.

Eventually the brook dried up because of the drought.

Then GOD spoke to him: “Get up and go to Zarephath in Sidon & live there.

I’ve instructed a woman who lives there, a widow, to feed you.”

So he got up and went to Zarephath.

As he came to the entrance of the village he met a woman, a widow, gathering firewood.

He asked her,

Please, would you bring me a little water in a jug? I need a drink.

As she went to get it, he called out,

And while you’re at it, would you bring me something to eat?

She said,

I swear, as surely as your GOD lives, I don’t have so much as a biscuit.

I have a handful of flour in a jar and a little oil in a bottle;

you found me scratching together just enough firewood to make a last meal for my son and me. After we eat it, we’ll die.”

Elijah said to her,

Don’t worry about a thing. Go ahead and do what you’ve said.

But first make a small biscuit for me and bring it back here.

Then go ahead and make a meal from what’s left for you and your son.

This is the word of the GOD of Israel

The jar of flour will not run out and the bottle of oil will not become empty before GOD sends rain on the land and ends this drought.’” …

1 Kings 17:2-14 MSG

I don’t like what’s going down right now in our surroundings!

I don’t know anyone that’s getting a kick out of anything our so called
“elites” are coming up with as a solution.

The natural thing is to find fault with every leader and every so called
solution.

There’s a lot of desperation everywhere.

There’s a hopeless rage that’s brewing & building.

What if it gets worse? What if “so in so” gets elected?

What if the famine of sensible solutions totally dries up?

What if our police protection gets cut down 50% of what it is?

What if they all retire and run for the hills of Idaho?

What if we’re not in good hands with Allstate?

What if ruthless people surround our houses and demand that we get out because their taking everything we have and we can go live under the bridge with the big troll?

The psalmist asks in desperate prayer

WHY DO You stand afar off, O Lord?

Why do You hide Yourself,

Lord, You’re acting like You’re holding Your hands over Your eyes.

You’re acting like You’re looking the other way.

Don’t You see our trouble? Don’t You see our distress & desperation?

If we go to pot the whole world goes to pot.

We thought You we’re our Shepherd.

These twisted maniacs are chasing us with clubs.

They’re burning us to the ground and our in proud arrogance elected officials are cheering them on.

Their emptying the jails of all the riff raff so they can refill the jails with us

We keep waiting for You to pick us up.

We keep thinking this nightmare surrounding us will backfire and everything will get back to how it used to be.

Are we destined to be controlled by a mob of ruthless goons?

Psalms 10:1-3 paraphrase

Life can become a big tangle. And God let’s it happen.

But God will untangle us, because His mercy endures forever;
We need to wait & see the unfolding of His plans,

We should never let our emotions make us feel trapped in all the constant impossible quagmire that we are so prone to fall into

We have to let God work it out & don’t get caught in the sludge of despair

It’s tempting to hang our head in failure.

I do it constantly

I keep trying though to Let God into every situation. But We have to trust.

Even though almost Everyday I blow it. I start feeling frantic.

I commit new acts of stupidity & bungle into foolish reactions.

I used to live in Western Colorado.

It was back when trapping wild game was legal.

I had a couple of Bible studies with guys who were trappers by hobby.

One guy was so into animal pelts that he would stop & skin roadkill.

He took a hide he’d tanned and recovered one of my Bibles

One time I went up into the mountains with him We checked his trap lines.

He at the time he was trapping Coyotes.

There was a bounty that could be collected plus the value of the pelt.

He was incredibly fast at emptying the traps and skinning.

The prey when trapped was passive and calmly accepted their fate.

We’ve got to let the Lord untangle our traps.

We can’t be like the coyote who caught his leg in a snare and chewed off three wrong legs while the one leg stayed trapped.

F. B. Meyer wrote:

We need to pray out every problem and Wait,

that means really, patiently wait!!!

God always has a way, His way out!!!

Psalm 91 says:

We sit down in God’s presence, we rest under our Lord’s shadow,

GOD, is our refuge. We trust in Him and we’re safe!”

He rescues us from hidden traps,

He shields us from deadly hazards.

His powerful outstretched arms protect us

We’re perfectly safe; as His powerful hands fend off all harm.

We’re to Fear nothing.

There isn’t any phrase repeated more often by God then FEAR NOT!!!

Don’t fear ravenous wild wolves in the night,

Don’t fear flying bricks and Molotov cocktails in the day,

Don’t fear germ warfare and sinister diseases that prowl through the air

Don’t fear disaster that erupts on every street in our cities.

Even though others succumb all around us,

Even though our ICU’s are jammed to capacity and people are

dropping like flies all around us; DON’T FEAR.

No harm will even graze us

We’ll stand untouched,

We’ll be safe with corpses stacked all around us.

I picked up a coffee at Starbucks the other day.

I asked the masked barista what he was taking in college,

He said he was studying undertaking.

I looked at my cup thinking an embalmer just made my drink.

Don’t fear if cold hearted embalmers are serving us.

because GOD ’s our refuge,

Evil can’t get close to us, tragedy and harm can’t bust through the door.

God has ordered his angels to guard you wherever you go.

If we stumble, they’ll catch us; their job is to keep us from falling.

We’ll walk unharmed among lions and snakes, and ruthless humans that

act like poisonous serpents in our path.

God is holding on to us in His loving arms

Our Lord Jesus promises to get us out of all trouble.

We can trust Him. We can call on Him.

He’s faster then 911 on our speed dial me

He always answer, He’s always at our side in bad times;

He’ll rescue us, then we’ll throw a praise party.

Fact is might as we’ll start that praise party of gratitude now

We have a friend who died of a very rapidly growing brain tumor.

She said she wanted to memorize Psalm 91 while her brain was still

functioning.

She wanted the Psalm treasured in her heart as she waited for Jesus

to carry her home.

The real victims

An estimated 57 million preborn human beings have been killed in America in just the last 42 years.

That’s roughly 1.3 million a year, 108,000 per month, 3,600 per day, or 2.5 human beings per minute.

There is no other victimized people group that even comes close to those numbers.

The Supplanting of Grace and Replacing weeds with beauty

“Know ye the land where the cypress and myrtle
Are emblems of deeds that are done in their clime?”

Lord Byron

“Instead of the thorn shall come up the cypress tree, And instead of the brier shall come up the myrtle tree…” Isaiah 55:13

It’s not enough to eradicate thorns and thistles. God does more: He causes the cypress & myrtle to flourish where nettles & weeds encumber the ground

It’s not enough that God removes our vices. He does more: He replaces them one by one with solid virtues, so that the old site of evil becomes a place of rare beauty.

As A Roper wrote: Where cynicism abounded, hope and optimism begin to emerge;

where harshness and sarcasm flourished, kind, gentle words appear;

where malice & anger produced anxiety & turmoil, forbearance, tranquility & peace start to surface;

where lust grew rampant & unrestrained, pure love springs up.

This is the supplanted life, the living & lasting sign of God’s work, the only memorial that matters

And how does this transformation take place?

Just ask the Lord to do it. Seek the Lord while he may be found; call upon him while he is near.” Isaiah 55:6

God can be “found,” when we grow tired of ourselves when we stop our self-efforts to be good. Then God calls us, reminding us that he’s at hand.

Turn to him, act “before desire shall fail,”

—turn from all our strategies to sanctify ourselves to One who loves us to death. A.E. Houseman

“And he will have mercy on us” Isaiah 55:7

Sink our roots into God’s Word & ask Him to speak to us

“as the rain & the snow come down from heaven & do not return to it without watering the earth, making it bear & sprout, so shall God’s Word be that goes forth from His mouth; It shall not return to Him void, But it will accomplish what God pleases, And it shall prosper in the thing for which God sent it” Isaiah 55.10,11

Lord Jesus burn Your words into our hearts Make Your voice bear fruit in us.

Lord Jesus drench us in Your grace let it “come down” Let Your beauty “spring up”; from Your word accomplish Your will & the purpose for which You’ve planned.

Waiting on thy will

Hold us in quiet through the age-long minute,

while Thou art silent, and the wind is shrill;

can the boat sink while Thou, dear Lord, are in it?

Can the heart faint that waiteth on Thy will?

The Sounds of many Waters

The Mystery and Might of Water

“The most appalling quality of water is its strength.

I love its flash & gleam, its music, its pliancy & grace, its slap against my body; but I fear its strength.”

Rivers, are irrepressibly themselves & in being so, more than themselves — sources & symbols of life,

impartial witnesses imbued not merely with the elemental but with the existential.

There is a mystery about cascading torrents of rivers that draws us to them,

for they rise from hidden places & travel by routes that are not always tomorrow

where they might be today,”

Maria Popova

His voice was as the sound of many waters

Revelation 1:15

Imagine arguing with the thunderous poundings of Niagara Falls or Snoqualmie Falls!

Visualize standing at the foot of the falls with some 12 million cubic feet of water roaring down each

minute and trying to argue with a tumultuous ear-splitting voice like that!

A mighty waterfall pours out its gargantuas sound with a deafening roar.

This is a powerful voice, unmoved by the apathy, unaffected by the rejectors animosity.

A beautiful penetrating voice deserving of all admiration of those that hear.

The silence of God in the face of contemporary upheavals is a great conundrum.

Sir Robert Anderson says,

“When faith murmurs, and unbelief revolts, and men challenge the Supreme to break

that silence and declare Himself, how little do they realize what that challenge means!

It means the withdrawal of the amnesty

It means the end of the reign of grace

It means the closing of the day of mercy and the dawning of the day of wrath.”

As John Phillips confirms:

“One day that voice “as the sound of many waters”

will break the silence with a roar,

and all voices raised in angry protest will be silenced,

drowned out by His.”

Why We Trust God

He knows us by name.

This is GOD’s Message,

Our God who made us,

the One who got us started:

Don’t be afraid, He’s redeemed us.

He’s called our name. We’re His.

When we’re in over our head, He’ll be there with us.

When we’re in rough waters, we wont go down.

When we’re between a rock and a hard place,

it won’t be a dead end-

Because GOD, is our personal God,

He’s our Savior. He paid a huge price for us!

That’s how much we mean to Him!

That’s how much He loves us!

He’d sell off the whole world to get us,

He’d trade creation just for us.

Isaiah 43:1-4 MSG

He fights for us.

GOD will fight our battle for us.

We should keep our mouths from complaining!

Exodus 14:14

We just need to stand still & see the salvation of the Lord

He thinks about us

Your thoughts Lord— how rare,

how beautiful! God,

We’ll never comprehend them!

We couldn’t even begin to count them

You think about us constantly.

Your thoughts of us are more than

all the sand of the sea.

Oh, let us rise in the morning

and live always with you!

Psalms 139:17

He has plans for us

He assures us

I am God…I know what I’m doing.

I have it all planned out—

plans to take care of you,

not abandon you,

plans to give you the future

you hope for.

When you call on me,

when you come and pray to Me,

I’ll listen.

When you come looking for Me,

We’ll find Him!

Yes, when we get serious about finding Him

and want Him more than anything else,

He’ll make sure we won’t

be disappointed.

This is GOD ’s Promise.

He’ll turn things around for us.

He’ll bring us back from all the countries into which
He drove you”—

This is GOD ’s Promise.—

He’ll bring you home to the place from which I sent
you off into exile.

You can count on it.

Jeremiah 29:10-14 MSG

•He is our refuge

We’ll wait as long as God says.

Everything we hope for comes from God, so why not?

He’s our solid rock under our feet,

He’s the breathing room for our soul,

He’s our impregnable castle:

We’re set for life.

Our help and glory are in God –

He’s granite-strength

He’s our safe-harbor-God-

We’ll trust Him absolutely,

we can lay our lives on the line for Him.

God is our safe place to be.

People are just so much smoke,

Their like a mirage.

Put them together, they’re nothing;

two times nothing is nothing.

Psalm 62:5-9 MSG

He is always with us.

Christ directs us to Go out and train everyone we meet,

mark them by baptism in
the threefold name:

Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.

Then instruct them in the practice
of all Jesus has commanded us.

He promises, I’ll be with you as you do this, day after day after day, right up to the end of the age.

Mathew 28:20

These are hot times

“I have chosen you in the furnace of affliction.”

Isa. 48:10

Check it out,

God refines us, but not as silver;

God tries and choses us in the furnace of affliction.

It’s for His sake, He does it [

He won’t utterly destroy us
He’s not going to let His name to be polluted & profaned
He’s not going to allow His glory to be diminished
by permitting the worshipers of idols to triumph over us

God lets us in on the way He works in us:

He tells us what He’s doing beforehand,

But are we paying attention? Are we alert to His voice?

Or are we a bunch of hardheads?

Are we obstinate and a bunch of dumb donkeys?

Idol worshippers & profane politicians don’t have an edge on us.

Doesn’t God’s voice come like a soft shower through
His Word!

Doesn’t God’s voice assuage the fury of the the flame?

God’s voice is our asbestos armor, the fire has no power!

Let the affliction come─God has chosen us.

“Poverty, You can stride in at our door;

but God is in the house already & He has chosen us.

Sickness, you can intrude; but God has comforts ready

God has chosen us.

Whatever happens in this vale of tears,

We know that God has chosen us.

Fear not, Christ Jesus is with us.

In all our fiery trials,

His presence is our comfort & safety.

He will never leave us

He has chosen us for His own.

He keeps saying:

“Fear not, for I am with you,”

We are His chosen ones in “the furnace of affliction.”

C. H. Spurgeon.

Pain’s furnace heat within us quivers,
God’s breath upon the flame doth blow;

And all our heart in anguish shivers
And trembles at the fiery glow;

And yet we whisper, “As God will!”
And in the hottest fire hold still.

He comes & lays our heart, all heated,
On the hard anvil, minded so

Into His own fair shape to beat it
With His great hammer, blow on blow;

And yet we whisper, “As God will!”
And at His heaviest blows hold still.

He takes our softened heart & beats it;
The sparks fly off at every blow;

He turns it o’er & o’er & heats it,
And lets it cool & makes it glow;

And yet we whisper, “As God will!”
And in His mighty hand hold still.

Why should we murmur? for the sorrow
Thus only longer-lived would be;

The end may come & will tomorrow,
When God has done His work in us;

So we say trusting, “As God will!”
And, trusting to the end, hold still.”

Julius Sturm.

The burden of suffering seems a tombstone hung about
our necks, while in reality it is only the weight which is necessary to keep down the diver while he is hunting for pearls.

When the Lord knocks let Him in

Sometimes I feel like our house was built on an ant hill.

These little pests pop up out of no where.

There is not a room where they don’t invade.

No matter what we do they just keep coming.

There are effective solutions but it takes constant vigilance.

Satanic deterrents are always invasively popping up.

And like our cat they’re agile, athletic and enjoy hiding everywhere.

They sleuth around with stealth skulking our every move.

Our cat is good and is very facial.

While I’m sleeping at night I’ll wake up with the cat purring in my face.

Now cats aren’t as creepy as ants.

But boy are they sneaky and quiet.

So why did God leave all these sinister menacing opponents around?

Why so many enemies?

Enemies tell us what we need to hear.

Their hate drive us to the love of God.

Jude encourages us

But you are God’s loved ones,

So build yourselves up and get comforted in a growing faith

Develop & stir your faith up.

It’s faith that sets us apart as the special loved ones of God

Make progress & rise higher & higher in knowing how much Jesus loves us.

Pray confidently in the Holy Spirit in the realization that our voice is valuable

to the Lord Jesus

And God loves to hear every feeling we’re having.

Our Father delights to carry our burdens & heartaches

Our best Guard & greatest protection is to keep ourselves in the love of God

The expectation & hope we should cultivate is that our Lord Jesus Christ

is pouring His mercy on us

God’s love is the only thing that keeps us from stumbling.

He’s the only one who keeps us safe from slipping or falling.

His voice represents us in Christ as unblemished, blameless & faultless.

In His presence there is glory, triumphant joy & exultation.

Jesus is our source of unspeakable, ecstatic delight.

To this one & only God & our Savior through Jesus Christ our Lord,

We experience His glory & majesty, might & dominion, power & authority

And that’s what enemies do.

They drive us into our Fathers loving arms to experience our God

Jude 1:20-25 paraphrased

PSALMS 18:1-2 LOVE’S REASONS

THE LORD IS: OUR SENSITIVITY

We will love you, O Lord,

Overwhelm us with Your love for us

Deepen our love for You Lord.

Our love for You is deepened the deeper we realize Your love for us

Show us constantly how You’re the Lover of our soul

Where our treasure is there will our heart be also.

So our enemies show us what we treasure most.

Jessica Mitford, English author, journalist & political campaigner wrote:

Lifelong enemies are, I think, as hard to make & as important

to one’s well-being as lifelong friends

Walt Whitman noted

I call to the world to distrust the accounts of my friends,

but listen to my enemies, as I myself do

What an odd prayer it is ask that a person be turned over to Satan

for the destruction of the flesh!

The flesh isn’t being destroyed but our confidence

that there is something to gain by our catering

to our low life appetites needs a death blow.

We are told we are dead to sin.

This theme is convincingly repeated over and over.

Why in the World would sneak into the graveyard.

Why would we dig up our gravesite.

Why would we pry open our roughy coffin.

And suddenly we’re mouth to mouth with our rotting skank corpse.

The wages of sin is death.

We die to God’s voice.

Our feelings of His presence dies.

Our sense of His caring listening ear disappears.

No wonder the enemy of our souls keeps attacking

So we find ourselves in the fires of God’s crucible

to burn away the dross and drive us to God.

THE LORD IS: OUR STRENGTH

God allowed Israel’s enemies to oppress them

because they forgot that The Lord was their strength

and they became unfaithful to Him.

The oppression from enemies turned Israel back to God.

As unsavory as it is it’s enemies who are a signal of our approval with God!

Jesus said we are blessed when persecuted for righteousness’ sake,

because we have a great reward in heaven,

and we are in good company, because all the prophets had persecutors

Matt 5.10–12

We’re not oppressed and hounded because we’re so righteous.

We’re ill-treated because we want to be near Jesus.

We want Him as our life source.

James & John, rejoiced,

“that they were counted worthy to suffer shame for Jesus name”

Acts 5.41

Naturally those who oppose will identify every inconsistency in our life.

But, “If we’re reproached for the name of Christ, blessed are we,

for the Spirit of glory and of God rests upon us”

1Pe 4.14

So we’re driven to God crying:

Make us consistent in exchanging our weakness for Your strength

Pour Your enabling grace into us

Deepen our prayer dependence

Increase our trust in You

Reveal how You are our life

When Christ who is our life appears

Define for us how our old life dead

Describe to us how our new life is hid with Christ in God

Enemies Sharpen Our Skills

When we struggled with severe critics we need constant reminders

of the value of tough times and tough people!

“A smooth sea never made a skilled sailor.”

Ugly pressure produces perseverance, which produces character

and that produces hope as the love of God engulfs our heart.

Rom 5.3–5

So we count it all joy when we fall into various trials

that are brought on by our enemies,

knowing that the testing of our faith produces patience.

But let patience have its perfect work,

that we may be perfect & complete, lacking nothing

Jam 1.2–4

I’m sorry, best as I can understand from my 60 years in the Book;

We won’t learn perseverance, character, hope & patience without enemies?

Enemies Tell Us What We Need to Hear

Antisthenes, a Greek philosopher and pupil of Socrates wrote:

Pay attention to your enemies, for they are the first to discover our mistakes

Edmund Burke noted

He that wrestles with us strengthens our nerves, and sharpens our skill.

Our antagonist is our helper

Gene Fowler added:

Everyone needs a warm personal enemy or two

to keep him free from rust in the movable parts of his mind

Enemies delight to show us our errors.

Don’t get me wrong real friends help us too.

Paul dealt with the problems of those he wrote to in His letters.

When he corrected the Galatians

he knew they might not like what they would hear,

He wrote

Have I therefore become your enemy because I tell you the truth?

Gal 4.16

If a friend corrects us or opposes us, has he become an enemy?

Not necessarily, though it does happen.

Proverbs 27 shows that what friends do to us they do for our good,

but enemies seek to destroy us, even when they act friendly,

Open rebuke is better Than love carefully concealed.

Faithful are the wounds of a friend,

But the kisses of an enemy are deceitful.

Proverbs 27.5, 6

Enemies do not care if they offend us.

Enemies do not fear losing our friendship.

Friends fear both things.

Therefore, friends might hold back the constructive criticisms we need.

Enemies criticize, though they intended it to be destructive.

Real friends consider what they say, and use it constructively,

Rebuke is more effective for a wise man Than a hundred blows on a fool.

Prov 17.10

Whether it’s from an enemy or a friend they can both be saviors,

“in preventing us from superficiality” Joyce Carol Oates

“Atheists make us think harder on why I believe in God.

Evolutionists challenge us to consider my arguments in support of creation.

Without someone opposing us, we take our ease.” Don Ruhl

THE LORD IS: OUR STABILITY

The Lord is our rock

Make us steadfast

Make us unmovable

Cause us to be always abounding in Your work Lord

Impact us in the reality that our labor is not in vain in the Lord.

Stabilize us to stand our ground

Keep us pressing ahead

Don’t let us hold back

Direct us to push ourselves into Your work & Your beautiful design

Give us confidence that nothing we do for You is a waste of time

Show us that nothing we do for You is a futile effort

Enemies Reveal Our Loyalties and securities and insecurities

Jesus warned,

Woe to you when all men speak well of you,

for so did their fathers to the false prophets

Luke 6.26

If all we have is applause and pats on the back

we should question our effectiveness in Christ.

THE LORD IS: OUR SECURITY

and my fortress,

Let us awake to Your image

You are so sympathetic to us

You pity us

You are merciful to us

Lead us by Your Spirit of love

Our stability and what keeps us in Balance

is sometimes the most awkward things

When we think we’re achieving something great, enemies humble us.

We need building up, but we also need humility.

Enemies grant that service to us.

Enemies keep us from getting comfortable with ourselves,

and with our efforts.

Paul had cool visions of heaven

and that could have made him think he was greater than he was,

So to keep him from self exaltation by his cool insights,

a thorn in the flesh was given to him, (OUCH)

a messenger of Satan to buffet him,

So he wouldn’t be exalted above measure.

Yes, of course, like we all do, He pleaded with the Lord three times

TAKE THIS UGLY AFFLICTION AWAY.

And Jesus says to us, ‘

My grace is sufficient for you,

for My strength is made perfect in weakness.’

Therefore most gladly we boast in our infirmities,

that the power of Christ may rest upon us.

As crazy as it sounds:

We take pleasure in infirmities, in reproaches, in needs,

in persecutions, in distresses, for Christ’s sake.

For when I am weak, then I am strong”

2Co 12.7–10
