Israel in Isaiah 52

She has been defiled Isa. 52:1

She has been chained Isa. 52:2

She has been sold for nothing Isa. 52:3

She has been oppressed Isa. 52:4

She has been taken away for nothing Isa. 52:5

She has been mocked Isa. 52:5

But now she will “sit enthroned” like a queen in Jerusalem Isa. 52:2

But now she is to wear “garments of splendor” Isa. 52:1

Though she was sold for nothing, in God’s eyes she is still beyond price Isa. 52:3

God still calls Israel “my people” Isa. 52:4

He attaches his own name to what has happened to them:

His name that has been constantly blasphemed” Isa. 52:5

Now they can take comfort: the God who foretold their destruction has foretold their restoration Isa. 52:6

God’s gracious goodness and faithfulness is pursuing her and delivering her from the punishment that he himself has imposed.

God is love

It is the knowledge that God is Love that means the most to us

When we are heart broken we look to Him.

Love is His very nature.

Love is what He is.

It is God’s very being.

He is not only loving.

He is love.

This is where our heart finds complete rest.

And we love Him because He first loved us

Jesus is near

Right there in the dust, he sat by the gate,
To listen to footsteps and patiently wait.

The blind man just didn’t dream that this was the day
That Jesus of Nazareth would pass by his way.

She stood by the well, so tired and alone,
Misfortune and heartache was all she had known,

She looked at the stranger, but who would ever think,
Here is Jesus to offer her living water to drink.

They were only children so happy at play
And told to stay quiet and out of the way;

But then came the Saviour with arms open wide,
They’re part of His kingdom, make room by His side.

My friend if you’re listening
this is the moment you can be free

This very same Jesus is right here today;
Release your faith and touch Him, then believe I say.

Something good is can happen to us Happen this very day. As Jesus of Nazareth is passing our way.

There’s no “If’s”

Jesus asked the boy’s father

How long has this been going on?

Ever since he was a little boy.

Constantly he falls into the fire or he throws himself in the river attempting to harm himself.

He’s a total basket case!

If you can do anything, do it. Have a heart and help us!

Jesus said, “If? There are no ‘ifs’ with true faith!

Anything can happen with real faith in God through prayer!

No sooner were the words out of Jesus mouth than the father cried,

Then I believe. Help me with my doubts!

A FATHERS REPROVING ADMONISHMENT

It is unique, that Jacob, in referring to his children, compared them to various animals.

He’s prophetic in describing their character, their disposition, their personality and their observable temperaments.

James Russell Miller 1840–1912 in his book; A life of character writes:

“that in the Scriptures we find all the patterns for all the parts of our character.

Not just the great and prominent elements of character—

but also characters most minute features and it’s delicate lines and shadings of ornamentation.”

The principles, the beatitudes, all Christ’s precepts, the ethical teachings all show

to us the patterns of good character and contrasting bad characteristics.

We have lists of negative qualities referred to as the works of the flesh.

These are aspects of peculiarities and distinguishing idiosyncrasies.

We have positive attributes describing Christlike character.

These are beautiful dispositions that are the fruit of the Spirit

We see in Romans 1 the twelve step decline of humanities decadence.

This degeneracy begins from disregard of God to depravation to degeneracy then

to deterioration on into complete debauchery.

We have the positive path of growing in grace through developing an intimate relationship with Jesus.

Christ only is the persona of all perfections of character.

He is unrivaled in His excellence.

He is peerless and unequaled.

His revolutionary impact changes the entire architecture of our total depravity through our love relationship with Him.

Proverbs boils character down into a variety of contrasts and their fateful far reaching effects.

We see the wise individual verses the fool.

Not just one kind of fool but five categories of fools.

We read of the strange individuals verses the virtuous individuals.

And then there’s authoritative instructions on the consequences of associating with corrupting, perverting and defiling individuals

In contrast we’re told of the elevating, ennobling, uplifting influences of wise and prudent persons of character.

Jacob was not a coward in facing off with his offspring.

Their reaction toward him for calling a spade a spade didn’t dissuade or intimidate him.

Jacob was uncompromising by the consequential possibilities of lifetime rejection and revolt by relating his sage observations.

He knew each one of his children from conception to the present.

He had the power of blessing and cursing in his words.

He begins his declarations in his waning years.

Judah is like a lion.

Naphtali is like a deer.

Benjamin is like a wolf.

Dan is like a serpent.

But yikes, Issachar is like an ass.

The picture of a donkey or jack ass is one of dumbness and of an inability to appreciate higher things.

But an ass can be useful and strong.

Genesis 49:14–15

Issachar was also one of Leah’s sons, the son born when Leah hired away Jacob from Rachel.

The circumstances of his birth could have tainted Issachar’s character.

He’s never pictured as an active person and lacks aggression in his personality.

He’s is basically content to take a humble place.

But Jacob, looking at Issachar, spoke of his strength

“Issachar,” he said, “is a strong ass.”

It is so weird to be considered a strong ass.

It’s unflattering to be likened to something strong but basically stupid at the same time.

Ismael, Hager’s son is called:

“a wild donkey of a man,

His hand will be against everyone, and everyone’s hand will be against him;

And he will live to the east of all his brothers” Genesis 16:12

Williams renders this

he is a wild-ass man, (an untamable ass)

Some historians view Ismael as the father of the Arab world.

Although, other researchers say the Arab nations are from the Canaanite nations who were the product of Lots incestuous relationship between his two daughters.

We are told that Ishmael, was fruitful and greatly increased in numbers.

He was the father of twelve rulers, and made into a great nation. Gen. 17:20

We read that Ismael, as a distant half brother Genesis 25:18

Would have descendants who “lived in hostility towards all their brothers.”

Which may be the roots of the harsh tension between the Arab and Jewish nation.

But, back to Issachar’s strength as an ass.

Phillips writes:

He was a strong man—not strong in the sense of explosive leadership but in the sense of dependability.

He was not a man easily moved, but you knew where you stood with him.

He was a plodder, and solid.

“And he saw that rest was good & the land that it was pleasant.” Gen. 49:15a

Issachar would prefer the comforts of home to future glory.

He inherited a very fertile strip of land in the kingdom; it was in the north, fronting on the Jordan, a territory very coveted by raiders.

Issachar would yield up dignity and freedom so long as he could continue to farm his fields and be at ease.

When the book of Judges recapitulates the sketchy achievements of the tribes in taking hold of their possessions in Canaan, Issachar is not even mentioned (Judges 1).

The tribe was such a failure along military lines it did not deserve a place among those who at least made some effort to possess their possessions.

But Jacob saw even more.

The indolent, easygoing disposition of Issachar pointed to his servitude

Gen. 49:15b

“And he bowed his shoulder to bear and became a servant unto tribute.”

There was no blame, simply a lack of achievement.

But what’s cool is Issachar did amount to something after all.

When the tribes were camped or on the march,

Issachar was placed next to Zebulun & Judah at the head of them all

Numbers 10:15

Association with those vigorous members of the kingdom was intended to inspire sluggish Issachar, and that is just what happened.

In the days of the judges, Issachar came forward to fight with Barak and even marched to bear the brunt of battle

Judges 5:15

Deborah, whose name means “the bee,” stung lazy Issachar into activity at last.

Later on, Issachar gave four kings to the northern kingdom.

But, best of all, in David’s day the men of Issachar were men who had understanding of the times, men who knew what Israel ought to do.

They took the lead in welcoming David back to the throne

1 Chronicles 12:32, 38–40

There’s a sense in which we are all strong dumb jack asses.

And, the way out is to get stung with the realization of our need of Jesus.

It is in Him & only in our Lord Jesus Christ that we embrace the glory of beauty & blessings

When we welcome Jesus onto the throne of our heart we are changed from glory to glory by

Christ’s Spirit.

One of the most intriguing studies I’ve ever read is The Names on the Gates of Pearl

by C. H. Waller. He traces the 12 sons of Jacob to eternity where their names are

engraved on the 12 Gates of Pearl in paradise.

Nothing adds up

To say the world we live in ‘doesn’t add up’ is a pretty accurate description.

Hardly a day passes but we ask why this or that has happened,

So why it has happened? Why now? Why is it lasting?

This is what Ecclesiastes meant by saying ‘all is vanity’

How do we explain the world & what happening in it?

It’s like trying to grab a handful of wind!

We know that a higher wisdom than ours rules all.

A more complete justice than we can bring to bear.

An almighty power is having His way.

There is a total love, beyond our understanding, that is directing everything, parceling out experiences, determining times and seasons.

Is there a logical description of things for the unbelieving mind?

What are we to think when nothing around us ‘adds up’?

We have the Tower of Babel in Genesis 11

We have the United Nations striving to make a safe world.

We want our surroundings organized, neat, unified & fortified against threat.

We pray for ‘kings & all in authority that we might lead a quiet & peaceable life

1 Tim. 2:2

But we have the evil one & his minions, Satan sowing weeds in the best soil.

Our human endeavors for peace are suddenly literally explosive.

Our security is not in human organization nor national strength nor personal insurance policies & sound banking,

Our assurances & assumptions are not in our ability to ‘explain’

Everything is only in the hand of Jesus, enfolded in the hand of the Father

John 10:28

Adapted from some thoughts of Moyter

Comfort

“Comfort, comfort my people, says your God” (Isaiah 40:1).

“The English word ‘comfort’ comes from two Latin words that together

mean ‘with strength.’

When Isaiah says to us, ‘Be comforted!’ it is not a word of pity but of power.

God’s comfort does not weaken us; it strengthens us.

God is not indulging us but empowering us.”

“Comfort, comfort my people, says your God”

Isaiah 40:1

A. E. Hamilton prayed

Ask God to give us skill In comforts’ art;

That we may consecrated be and set apart

Into a life of sympathy.

For heavy is the weight of ill in every heart;

And comforters are needed much of a Christlike touch.

When we see how far we have fallen & how broken our world is, it explains something.

It reveals why disappointment invades our experience.

As we see more & more of life, we are infused with disappointment.

Our discouragement is persistent & so convincing.

Suddenly hope starts to look just plain stupid.

We become disappointed in our ideals

We are disappointed in romance

We are disappointed in the things we did in our lives that we thought had meaning,

We are disappointed in the people we used to trust,

We are disappointed in ourselves for becoming disappointed.

When all we hoped for has let us down,

We need more of Jesus. We need His real salvation.

We need His comfort through His Holy Spirit.

Our real source comfort & encouragement.

We need Christ’s courage within!

Oft times the day seems long, our trials hard to bear,

We’re tempted to complain, to murmur & despair;

But Christ will soon appear to catch us all away,

All tears forever over in God’s eternal day.

It will be worth it all when we see Jesus,

Life’s trials will seem so small when we see Christ;

One gliimpse of His dear face all sorrow will erase,

So bravely run the race till we see Christ.

Satan’s shoots at us with his burning darts of flaming discouragement

We need to stay focused in prayer

We take aim & destroy Satan’s darts of blazing destruction

Self-Discipline

Personal discipline is not popular.

Any insistence on self-discipline is usually resisted.

It’s viewed as a violation of our rights.

To have standards, to follow a set of ethics or to press moral policies

are now seen as a violation of our personal liberties.

The popular pursuit now is to be free-spirited and express yourself.

To be disciplined is viewed as being anti progressive.

To be self disciplined is now a restriction on freedom.

We just refuse to be bound by these confining handcuffs.

But a lack of self discipline is a lack of self-control which is a green light to immaturity and having the character quality of a jellyfish.

We’re to discipline ourselves for the purpose of godliness

1 Tim. 4:7

Phillips renders this:

Avoid false teaching & fake information which weakens us.

Out strength is in the truth. Truth builds faith.

And truth is absorbed when we follow sound teaching from God’s Word.

So we have to steer clear of all these stupid Godless fictions.

And we take the time and trouble to keep ourselves spiritually fit.

We can paraphrase 1 Timothy 4:7-10 this way:

But refuse and avoid irreverent legends.

Our minds and lives are being pummeled by profane, impure, godless fictions.

We’re surrounded by foolish tales and silly myths.

We have to reject them and express our disapproval of them.

We need to be involved in spiritual discipline to achieve godliness & loyalty to God.

We need daily enlist personal activities to keep ourselves spiritually fit

Physical training is of some value, but godliness (spiritual training) is useful and of value in everything and in every way.

It’s spiritual discipline that holds the promises for this present life and also for

our future life.

This saying is reliable & worthy of complete acceptance by everybody.

With a view to this we toil & strive, yes & we suffer reproach,

Because we have fixed our hope on the living God,

Who is our Savior, our Preserver, our Maintainer & our Deliverer.

So we trust in Him, we rely on Him & we adhere to Him to bless our Spirit

guided efforts

We need to stay clear of silly stories that get dressed up as religious freedoms.

We need to Exercise daily in God— we don’t want to become spiritually flabby,

We need regular Workouts in God’s gymnasium.

We need a disciplined life in God more then anything else.

We’re investing in the bank of the living God and He’ll bless our efforts

Let us be clear, if there is no discipline, there is no discipleship.

If we do not discipline ourselves, God Himself will discipline us

Heb. 12:5–11

One way or another, there will be discipline in our lives.

Given our tendency toward sin, we must discipline ourselves for the

purpose of godliness, or else God will discipline us. Unless we’re not His

The opposite of self-discipline is a self-indulgent living.

Self discipline is self-mastery, where we develop a strong resistance

to appetites & choices that weaken our resolve.

Self-rule is bringing every thought, word & action captive to the

obedience of Christ

2 Cor. 10:5

There is no advance in personal holiness & Christ like character

without self-control.

Only God can produce authentic self-discipline in us.

The quality of “self-control” is a fruit of the Spirit

Gal. 5:22–23

The vine (Jesus Christ) produces fruit in the branches.

So self-discipline is created only by the Spirit of Christ.

Self-control is never self-generated, it is God’s work of grace in us.

We are active in practicing it, we step out & we bear this fruit of self-discipline

by the filling of our lives with God’s Word & God’s Spirit.

We never produce self-control.

We yield to God’s voice by exposing ourselves to His Word.

Jesus said the Words I speak are Spirit & life. John 6:63

To be filled with God’s Word is to be filled with God’s Spirit

To be filled with God’s Spirit is to be filled with God’s Word

Steve Lawson notes:

“Jesus makes it clear, “Apart from Me, you can do nothing”

John 15:5

In our own willpower, we cannot do anything that pleases God.

Only by God’s enabling grace can we exercise self-control in our

ongoing war against sin.

The Apostle Paul affirms, “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me” Phil. 4:13

That is, Christ must be mightily working within us.

As sap flows into the branch, producing fruit, divine grace must fill us,

producing self-control. The self can never produce self-discipline.

Only as we live under the Holy Spirit’s control can we live self-controlled lives.

In Galatians 5:22–23, we read that there are nine aspects of the fruit of

the Spirit. Self-discipline appears last on the list.

By Self-discipline occupying this final position, it assumes a place of strategic importance.

In reality, self-discipline is the summation of the previous eight qualities that

the Spirit produces.

The work of the Spirit reaches its consummation in self-control.

This virtue enables us to realize every other aspect of spiritual fruit.

What Does Self-Discipline Look Like?

Self-discipline is compared with an athlete training for and competing in the

Olympic Games:

“Everyone who competes in the games exercises self-control in small things”

1 Cor. 9:25

If a runner would win the prize, he must bring his entire life under the strict discipline of rigorous training.

The strenuous workout of the athlete demands that he seriously restrict his personal liberties.

If he is to be victorious, he must refuse many individual freedoms.

Liberties are largely for spectators, not a champion athlete.

He must pursue a proper diet, sufficient rest, and arduous drills.

Every area of his life must be brought under control.

So we “Train ourselves for godliness” 1 Tim. 4:7

We pursue holiness, by disciplines of regular Bible reading, meditation, prayer,

and fellowship with others that do the same.

We also deny many legitimate pleasures if we are to win the prize.

This kind of self-discipline is a rebuke to half-hearted efforts.

We have to train for spiritual victory.

Otherwise we become out-of-shape with flabby faith.

They are spiritual couch potatoes with bulging spiritual waistlines.

Their lifestyle is self-indulgent due to their lack of self-control.

“I box in such a way, as not beating the air” 1 Cor. 9:26

A champion boxer must have a clearly-focused aim in the ring.

But an undisciplined fighter throws wild punches, never landing a blow on his opponent.

An undisciplined believer suffers great defeats in his bout against sin.

To the contrary, a believer must live with self-control in fighting against sin.

A champion athlete must beat his body into submission.

If not, he will be disqualified from the race.

“But I discipline my body and keep it under control, lest after preaching to

others I myself should be disqualified””
