THE PROVISION OF PROSPECT V.12-20

PROBLEMS ARE A POSITIVE  V.12-14

    TRUTH IS ADVANCED v.12

A PERCEPTION  But I would ye should understand, brethren,

A PROBLEM        that the things happened unto me

J.H. Jowett called this section of Philippians “the fortune of misfortune”.  Catastrophe and calamity are difficult to understand.  There are no accidents with God and He doesn’t make mistakes.  We may freak-out into a fatalistic mood swing in our emotions while we pay lip service to the fact that God is sovereign, but God is in control and what looks like a slip or what appears a drastic gaffe we need to release to His purpose.

Not till each loom is silent,

And the shuttles cease to fly,

Shall God reveal the pattern?

And explain the reason why

The dark threads were as needful

In the weaver’s skillful hand

As the threads of gold and silver

For the pattern which He planned

(Poem Author Unknown)

Getting tossed into prison is a far from positive note on any one’s resume but Paul is telling those in Philippi; and, the Spirit of God is speaking to us, saying “Relax, understand My purpose.”

A PROVIDENCE have fallen out rather

So how far do we stretch this stuff?  Is there really a sane line we need to maintain when we hammer negatives into positives?  There are hindrances, obstructions and interferences and there is nothing profitable about living in denial.  On the other hand, God’s Spirit challenges us that nothing is impossible with God so don’t be all devastated at each difficulty.  The gears don’t always mesh smoothly so we’re not to be stoic defeatists.

A PURSUIT       unto the furtherance of the gospel;

There is the Divine side of things and the human side of things and that is what prayer is all about.  Prayer is our vehicle of passage to find “Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth”

This word furtherance is a nautical term meaning “to make headway,” “to forge ahead.”  When we are heading somewhere if we are going to experience “furtherance” we are making progress on the journey.  Furtherance is what is known as a reverse invasion.  What appears on the surface, as a ground loss in warfare is actually ground being increased.  Like all paradoxical absurdities this is truth standing on its head to get attention.

You and I may feel at times like we’re going backwards.  We may look at our Nation or our World today and it appears that everything is in a mess and on the decline.  But God is not stumped; nothing hinders Him.  He is moving ahead and asks us to be on board with His purpose of spreading the glory of Christ no matter what the circumstances.

We have a natural suspicion that all things don’t work together for good and a hunch that only the positive experiences in life are God’s blessing.  This is more then a subconscious feeling lurking in the shadows.

John Bunyan while imprisoned in Bedford Prisons where he wrote Pilgrims Progress stated in a sermon: The Advantages of Disadvantages:

“I never had in all my life so great an inlet into the Word of God as now. Those Scriptures that I saw nothing in before are made in this place and state to shine upon me. I have seen that here which I am persuaded I shall never in this world be able to express.”

TRIALS ARE ACKNOWLEDGED V.13

THE RESTRICTIONS So that my bonds in Christ

THE RECOGNITION  are manifest in all the palace,

                                                  and in all other places;

Paul’s imprisonment was not a criminal charge but a Christ charge.  It is impossible to confine Christ for no one can imprison an infinite message.  The Sovereign of the universes will not be stymied.  Is there a force trying to thwart truth and prevent the perfection of Jesus’s salvation message?  Yes, there is growing animosity spilling out everywhere.  We cannot live in denial to the oppression of those who reject Jesus.  But we are not to crumble in paranoia.

TREPIDATION IS AVERTED V.14

The Challenge          And many of the brethren in the Lord,

The threat of harassment or any kind of rejection can cause us to feel timid and discouraged about saying we’re believers in Jesus.

If there is an increasing risk of loss of individual comfort and freedom in our stand for Christ we could be tempted to defect into various degrees of betrayal.

The Confidence        waxing confident by my bonds,

Paul was an outspoken leader in His love for Christ and He shared Jesus in every circumstance.  The negative effects of facing persecution to the point of imprisonment had a positive upshot instead.  Paul’s bold leadership in sharing the Gospel even in jail was powerfully effective.

To say that Paul was a fanatic about sharing his relationship with Jesus Christ with everyone is putting it mildly.  He was extreme, passionate and fervently dedicated to impacting everyone with his or her need of Jesus.

John Phillips wrote: “God in Christ had invaded time, and only the truths that related to Him were important in this life. Salvation from sin, a home in Heaven, union with Christ, life in a new dimension, and life driven by a new dynamic were the glorious realities that everybody needed to know. Paul’s sole goal in life was to make Christ known

Paul wrote: “I suffer trouble, as an evildoer, even unto bonds; but the Word of God is not bound” 2 Tim. 2:9

The Courage             are much more bold

Word Studies in the Greek N.T. writes: “The words “waxing confident” come from a word which means, “to persuade.” These Christians had been persuaded by the brave and fearless example of Paul in prison, and had come to a state of settled confidence in the Lord.”

The Communication  to speak the word without fear

“To speak” means to break silence.  It’s much more comfortable to be a closet Christian, to be an undercover secret agent.  Jesus can be an inconvenient, awkward admission and we are uncomfortable confessing our love of Him.  In the first century to believe in Jesus was more then just politically incorrect it might have meant for me imprisonment, torture and even a gruesome death to present my belief in Christ.

James Boice wrote in his Expositional Commentary that: “Some passages of the Bible have to be understood by the emotions as well as by the mind. To understand them fully you must put yourself into the shoes of the Bible characters and try to feel as they felt.”

Do we really feel that problems are a positive?  James says: “count it all joy with you fall into diverse trials” Jesus taught: “blessed are you when men revile you and persecute you and say all manner of evil against you falsely for my name”

It should be are constant prayer, that we could speak the Word without fear.  Phillips renders Matthew 10:29-33 in this way:

“Two sparrows sell for a farthing, don’t they? Yet not a single sparrow falls to the ground without your Father’s knowledge. The very hairs of your head are all numbered. Never be afraid, then – you are far more valuable than sparrows….  Every man who publicly acknowledges me I shall acknowledge in the presence of my Father in Heaven, but the man who disowns me before men I shall disown before my Father in Heaven.’

In a book titled Rut, Rot or Revival, The Problem of Change and Breaking Out of The Status Quo by A.W. Tozer we read the other side of the coin: “Do not try to pray down something that the Lord is telling you to do.  We are to witness boldly about Jesus Christ, not just pray about witnessing.  We have His commandment and as John says if we have His commandment and keep it, or in other words do it, Jesus will manifest Himself to us in special ways. John 14:21

The thought I take from this is not that we should not pray, no, we should pray as much as we breathe.  But prayer is not a closet of inactivity in which we wait for the idealization of circumstances.  The Jordan river would not part until the Israelis put their foot into it’s raging full waters.  We have to take steps and step in.

PHONINESS IS A POSITIVE V.15-18

     DIVERSE PRESENTATIONS

         (METHODS OF COMMUNICATION)

CRUEL PREACHING V.15

Some indeed preach Christ even of envy

Envy is an attitude of spite.  This lack of kindness boils in resentment at seeing the success of another.  It is strange that there was a jealous begrudging over the influence Paul was having as a communicator.

CAUSTIC PREACHING      and strife;

Strife means factious rivalry, it is being divisive, contentious and controversial.  We see this in the competitive spirit of various denominations where there can be hair splitting and axe grinding about an assortment of non-essential positions.

There is no room in the ministry for being competitive.  We are to each just serve Christ,  not seeking credit or recognition.  We’re not trying to outdo, outshine or outdistance one another.

Kent Hughes writes: “These preachers were not heretics or apostates. They were not preaching another gospel or another Christ, if they had been, Paul would have said, as he did to the Galatians, “Let him be accursed” Galatians 1:8, 9. Paul’s detractors were preaching the Biblical Jesus. They were not anti-Christ but anti-Paul.”

The Greek historian Xenophon said, “The envious are those annoyed only at their friends’ successes.” So envy is more set on depriving the other person of the desired thing than to gain it.

John of the Cross described its pathology in the church: “As far as envy is concerned, many experience displeasure when they see others in possession of spiritual goods. They feel sensibly hurt because others surpass them on this road, and they resent it when others are praised.”

CONSCIENTIOUS PREACHING and some also of good will:

Good will is sometimes translated “good pleasure” and “desire” it implies a gracious purpose, a good object being in view, with the idea of a resolve to please another.

We see good will used in Eph. 1:5; Rom. 10:1 and 2 Thess. 1:11.

Eph. 1:5: “having predestinated us unto the adoption of children by Jesus Christ to himself, according to the good pleasure of his will,

Rom. 10:1 my heart’s desire and prayer to God for Israel is, that they might be saved.”

2 Thess. 1:11: “we pray always for you, that our God would count you worthy of this calling, and fulfill all the good pleasure of his goodness, and the work of faith with power.”

Good will is the word used when the Angels announced the birth of Jesus saying glory to God in the highest and on the earth peace, good will to men.

John MacArthur refers to this as “the positive motive of desiring what is best for others.”

CONTENTIOUS PREACHING V.16

The one preach Christ of contention,

When preachers become territorial, possessive and illogically controlling, it produces a spirit of conflict and controversy.

It’s not “our church”, it’s not “our people” and it’s not “our truth”.  Christ is the head of the church and we are His people, He is the Lord of all truth.

CORRUPT PREACHING not sincerely,

When the purity of the gospel is mixed with the dirt of contention, jealousy and insincerity, it’s perplexing and confusing.

CALLOUS PREACHING supposing to add affliction to my bonds:

The word “affliction” suggests the aggravating and the burning friction of a prisoner’s chains against his ankles and wrists.

These preachers were hoping their success would irritate Paul. They hoped that thoughts of their freedom (compared to his incarceration) would gall him. It is hard to imagine how anyone could be so mean-spirited, but there are people who take pleasure in other people’s reverses.

COMPASSIONATE PREACHING V.17 But the other of love,

Love is focused on sacrifice not self-enhancement.  Love reaches out to strengthen, encourage and promote another.  Self-enhancement is narcissistic egomania.

What a concept, to be energized and motivated by love for others in all that we say and do for others.  How tragic that we can share a message of love with base intent.

CONCERNED PREACHING

knowing that I am set for the defense of the gospel.

Kent Hughes writes “Life will have its ups and downs for all of us. There will be times when we will feel metaphorically chained by the circumstances of life—misunderstood, maligned, ignored, spitefully used. But if the gospel is first in our life, we will be able to say with Paul, “What then? Only that in every way, whether in pretense or in truth, Christ is proclaimed, and in that I rejoice”

DETERMINED PROCEEDS V.18 What then? Notwithstanding,

          every way, whether in pretense, or in truth, Christ is preached;

and I therein do rejoice, yea, and will rejoice.

Isaiah 55:11 “My word … which goes forth from My mouth … will

not return to Me empty, without accomplishing what I desire, and

without succeeding in the matter for which I sent it.”

John Eadie writes, “The virtue lies in the gospel, not in the gospeller; in the exposition, and not in the expounder”

12. THE POWER OF JOY IN THE PRISON OF PAIN IN PHIL. (part11) Phil.1:10-11

12. THE POWER OF JOY IN THE PRISON OF PAIN IN PHIL. (part11)

PRAYERS PETITIONS V.10-11  that ye may approve things that are excellent; that ye may be sincere and without offence till the day of Christ Being filled with the fruits of righteousness which are by  Jesus Christ, unto the glory and praise of God.

INSIGHTFUL LIVING V.10

APPROVAL               That ye may approve

ADVISABILITY         things that are excellent;

Prayer for a deeper love of God leads us in a more intense love for others.  Our prayer is to see through His Word the design of insightful living where we have a growing intuitive perception in the best of things.  There are average things; there are good things but we want to approve the things that are excellent.

There a difference in things sold at Kmart and Wal-Mart in contrast to items purchased at Nordstrom’s or Bloomingdales.

The meat at Jack n the Box is a different quality then the steaks at the Metropolitan Grill and Ruth’s Chris Steakhouse.

Abounding love v.9 develops the cultivation in the approval of things of excellence.  The word “approve” translates to mean to examine and discern; in other words – refined discernment. It not only decides what is right and wrong; but, proves what is excellent, in contrast to that which is good.

We are to pray for ourselves. We are to pray for others.  Our petitions need to be specific. Our growth in love should refine in us an ability to test, verify, examine, judge and evaluate. We should be able to verify the authenticity of what has worth and value, in contrast to what is worthless and shoddy so we plea for the best.

Excellence literally means to carry through, to convey more worth, and to increase in superiority. We are to discriminate and distinguish to that which carries the greatest weight.

God’s investment in us proves our value to Him.  He gave us Jesus a life of perfect excellence.  Jesus sacrificed His all for His Father and thus for us.

What is our assessment of God’s expressions that demonstrate His love to us in His Word?  The Psalmist gives us his appraisal of God’s words of love in Psalms 19:10 – “more to be desired are they then gold, yes then much fine gold.”  His life carries through for us a life of excellence and His Word is a book of excellence.

Where are we in our evaluations?  We’re to pray that our love of God’s Word will be lifted to the highest of qualities, to develop the best character.  This approval is the attire that influences our inner life and clothes us on the outside to grow in love.  Are we surrounding our life in the wardrobe of Heavens best?

So much has been invested in us and this affirms our value. We are to live in the reality of our worth, in all of these investments of love.

INDISPUTABLE LEGITIMACY

SINCERE                  that ye may be sincere

The word sincere means without wax and uncontaminated.  Containers were often made of pottery in the first century.  If the vessel was flawed with cracks, wax was used to hide those cracks.

Royal Copenhagen Flora Danica is the world’s most expensive, commercially produced china. Flora Danica retails for $6, 975 per place setting.  Imagine, 7k for one place setting!  What if I dropped a plate like this and then glued it back together?  It would be insincere, damaged goods and marred with corruption.  God has picked us up from our brokenness and now commissions us to be renewed in His excellent Son and don’t paste ourselves together with the wax of this world.

We have a little 3-pound dog that we value as our baby.  I was walking her in Kirkland along the beach last summer and a lady offered me 4k for her.  I tend to be a little mercenary so I called my wife with the proposal.  She was not pleased with my avaricious implications.  I said but she only has four teeth left.  There was no sway in the situation as my wife’s sentimental attachments put greater value on our micro pooch.  What is best to my wife is her feelings about this little bundle of fur, me the $4000.

Our God values us and He wants us to approve His estimation. To be sincere to our genuine worth is to live according to the indisputable legitimacy of our authenticity.  Are we loyal to the sacrifice that has been given for us?  We were purchased at an infinite price and to live in a cheap cut rate way is shoddy and dishonoring.

SENSITIVE               and without offence till the day of Christ

What happens when we’re offensive, distasteful and repulsive?  We turn people off, drive them away and stumble those we want to have a positive influence on.  I’ve been taking medication for pain to keep me from getting painted into a corner with muscle, joint and nerve inflammation that limits my mobility. But what solves one issue of pain agitates another of internal tension.  My inner tolerance is sensitive, causing feelings of belligerence and confrontational vibrations.  I’m not claiming to be free of some natural tendencies to be a jerk, but these last few years with two surgeries and multiply steroidal spinal injections has really been exposing my tackiness.

We need to be sensitive to the drifts of situations for each day is an opportunity for Jesus.  He deserves to have a warm worshipping welcome when He returns.  When I stood in front of a room full of guests at my wedding it would have been a raw deal if my bride staggered down the aisle in rags all disheveled and intoxicated.

Wuest Word Studies defines “Without offence” as literally, “not cut against, not stumbled against.”

We, in living for the worth and honor of Christ, are to discern each step we take in our lives in respect for Jesus, in respect for others and in self respect so we are not a stumbling block to others.

IMBUED LIGHT V.11

CONTROLLED          Being filled with the fruits of righteousness

“Being filled” is a reference to what completes us or what controls us.  If I’m filled with fear or insecurity then that’s what will regulate my behavior.  If I’m filled with irritation and intolerance then offensive responses overflow out.

“The fruits” is a reference to the characteristics or flavor.  Fruit is the outer expressions and qualities of what we let control us.  What we all allow to sway our lives will produce a crop of fruits, flavors and characteristics.

Fruits of righteousness are the outcome of our lives when we are centering our life in God’s Spirit and allowing His Spirit to guide us and fill us.  The end result is the righteous fruit of love, joy, peace, longsuffering (selfless tolerance), gentleness, goodness, kindness, generosity, faith, meekness (non-demanding) temperance (self-discipline).  We hear these valuable characteristics and we should hunger and thirst for there excellence.

CHRIST-LIKE           which are by Jesus Christ,

God’s Spirit states in Romans that no one is righteous, not one. We arrive at this vital conclusion, to make us realize we constantly need our Savior, Jesus Christ who is righteous, perfect, and our only source of righteousness.  He took our unrighteousness and imputed His righteous character to our credits.  Our bankruptcy has been cleared by His love.

Jesus is very clear in John 15 where He says: “without me you can do nothing” We have to abide in Christ, draw our life from Him, depend on Him and relax in Him.

In John 15 we see connection, communion, continuity, and cleansing in Jesus, which results in degrees of Christ-like character, of fruit, more fruit and much fruit.

In this list of petitions we are seeing the simple need of asking for Jesus to live in and through us to thrive and proliferate in His love for us, His love in us and His love through us.  He is attached to us as our vine of connection and lives for us.  The flavor of His character is not something we can produce it’s the result of our attachment to His constant love.  Sitting and relaxing is not that difficult if you have a warm comfortable place to rest in.  We just need to grow in the attractiveness of leaning into the comfort of His love.

COMMENDABLE     unto the glory and praise of God.

The obvious result of what we are relying on for our life is by who is being magnified and enlarged.  John demonstrated his greatness by saying He has to increase and I need to decrease. This is why we plea to God that His love will abound in our life more and more.

11. THE POWER OF JOY IN THE PRISON OF PAIN IN PHIL. (part10)

11. The Power of Joy In The Prison Of Pain in Phil. (part10)

PRAYERS PETITIONS V.9-11

INCREASED LOVE V.9

ENCUMBERED          And this

What are our prayer burdens?  What keeps coming up in our heart as an encumbrance and inconvenience that we go to God?  The challenge of prayer is waiting and grappling with those things we view as problems.  We’re pushing for a solution and wondering  what steps we should take for a resolution.  This is the “and this” of our prayer journal as we lift it daily to our King in dependence and wonder.

EXPRESSION             I pray,

For years I’ve studied the topic of prayer and grappled with the phenomenon of talking to an invisible God.  Why does He make these tests for us?  He is our Lord, who promises that everything is in His control.

He nudges me with His mysterious ways.  I always come back to the realization that I just need to keep lifting everything up to His ear and trust with a hopeful waiting on Him.

So all the things I look to prod, stir and jolt me to a solution brings me to the same reclusive recognition that “I pray.”

I bring out my journal of names and requests, as the only reasonable expression that eases my emotion and centers my being on this singular act of obedience.

ENHANCEMENT       that you’re Love.

Improvement inside, somehow there’s an upgrade and enhancement of my behavior for those who have touched me and for those I care for.  How do I love with alert and watchful care for those I want to touch, to hold close?  I think that I was much more active when I imagined I was involved in a cure.  Now I wonder just how effective was I?  Was it mere blundering?  Did I cause wounds in an attempt to be healing and restoring?  God’s Word is a journal full of prayer requests; things Christ’s Spirit appeals to us to ask Him for, for others.  I need; we all need – enhancing.  We strive that we might improve in our love; progress in our affections; and, that our desires would be to advance to an honorable behavior of becoming close in Jesus.

ENLARGEMENT       may abound

EXPANSION              yet more and more

We may feel inadequate in some way, maybe even injured in our emotions or body.  But that doesn’t impede this area of our life and fruit bearing possibility.  We can pray for our heart and the hearts of others to enlarge and expand in an abounding of more and more love.

Praying is another word for petitioning, pleading, lobbying to see a change.  Often at the market where I shop someone will have a clipboard and will ask me to sign this petition to see some improvement in a social arena.  This is to raise names of voters who can impact an issue in those of government.

What a concept if we could carry clipboards of our most pressing issues about ourselves and those we love and enlist people to sign up to petition the throne of grace boldly with us.

So we keep articulating to the Lord, appealing, pleading and imploring “this I pray that our love may grow”

Abound is a word that means “an exceeding measure, something above the ordinary” Our love is to be lavish, overflowing, superfluous and exceeding in measure to be above the ordinary.

Love can be so misinterpreted by others as we seek to know how to express it, but love through prayer is always in season.

IMPROVED LEARNING

COMPREHENSION    in knowledge

CAPACITY                    and in all judgment;

I’ve done my share of dumb things but one of the things that was really stupid was back when I was 24.  I was extremely idealistic and had just come back from an overseas missionary exposure with Turkish immigrants in Germany.

I was attending a pilot program of ministry training in the San Francisco bay area to intern into the ministry.  It was 1974 the plane landed me in New York everything I owned was in a backpack and I walked to a highway and hitch hiked to the West Coast.

It was an intensive course of lecture, personal study and assigned practical work centered on a large local Bible Church.  I got very verbal about the lack of prayer in the Church with one of the pastoral trainers who in the past was in the marine corps and a highly seasoned individual.

What a mistake, I even had the brass to say they needed to employ all night prayer meetings.  He said that my vision was great and set me up with six couples to train in the rigors of prayer with the goal of training them to be disciplined prayer warriors for Jesus.  I had 12 weeks to boot camp them into an all night session for the needs of the world.

I lacked knowledge and judgment among a ton of other personal deprivations.  Learning our deficits and discrepancies is a path into the depths of the Grand Canyon.

“Why art thou cast down, O my soul.” (Psalm 43:5.)

George Mueller writes: “IS there ever any ground to be cast down? There are two reasons, but only two. If we are as yet unconverted, we have ground to be cast down; or if we have been converted and live in sin, then we are rightly cast down.

But except for these two things there is no ground to be cast down, for all else may be brought before God in prayer with supplication and thanksgiving. And regarding all our necessities, all our difficulties, all our trials, we may exercise faith in the power of God, and in the love of God.

“Hope thou in God.” Oh, remember this: There is never a time when we may not hope in God. Whatever our necessities, however great our difficulties, and though to all appearance help is impossible, yet our business is to hope in God, and it will be found that it is not in vain. In the Lord’s own time help will come.

Oh, the hundreds, yea, the thousands of times that I have found it thus within the past seventy years and four months!

When it seemed impossible that help could come, help did come; for God has His own resources. He is not confined. In ten thousand different ways, and at ten thousand different times God may help us.

Our business is to spread our cases before the Lord, in childlike simplicity to pour out all our heart before God, saying, “I do not deserve that You should hear me and answer my requests, but for the sake of my precious Lord Jesus; for His sake answer my prayer, and give me grace quietly to wait till it please Thee to answer my prayer. For I believe Thou wilt do it in Your own time and way.”

“For I shall yet praise him.” More prayer, more exercise of faith, more patient waiting, and the result will be blessing, abundant blessing. Thus I have found it many hundreds of times, and therefore I continually say to myself, “Hope thou in God.”—George Mueller.

Steve McQueen an amazing talent

Esther's avatarYankee Gospel Girl

[Editor’s note: As I write, it’s been about 4.5 years since I first published this piece, having no clue that it would go viral. Needless to say, this is young work, and I’ve written far better since then, but of all my articles this seems to be the one that struck a chord with the most people.

A couple years of reflection and reading the comments people have left inspired me to add this postscript in a comment of my own below, which I’d like to quote here:

“I think a lot of people have understandably found [this piece] because there’s still a lingering sense of hero-worship there for McQueen himself as an actor. Just his name still has a kind of magnetic force for people. But what I learned as I researched this piece, and even more after writing it in flipping through his first wife’s well-written memoirs…

Deliver us from the futility of assaulting Your purposes

Disallow God’s Principles        and cast away their cords from us.

9. The Power of Joy In The Prison Of Pain in Philippians (part8)

PRAYERS PASSION V.8

A STABLE FACT            For God is my record,

Validation, commendation, there’s a natural urge to want the endorsement of others.  We’d like the highest approval rating, and beam at an appearance of having stellar recommendations.  Why not, it feels neat to dream of a bevy of star-studded admirers.

But wouldn’t it be enough to assert that God is our record?

The word “record” is the Greek term (martus mou) from which we derive the term martyr.  This is the picture of extreme backing and tremendous intense validation.  Sounds a little weird that someone would back us so strong, but that’s the gist of the phrase, “For God is my record”

Can it be any sturdier then to claim that our authenticity is based on the God of eternity?  But what is God authenticating about Paul?

A SINCERE FIXATION        how greatly I long after you all

Paul is making a bold claim of the genuine reality of his deep compassion.  He’s saying the Lord knows how I feel for others.

“Epipotheo” is the Greek term for the phrase “greatly I long”

“Epi” is where we get the word epic or great.

“Potheo” is pathos, deep compassionate feeling for others.

A SENSITIVE FEELING     in the bowels of Jesus Christ

Bowels are a strange choice of words, other translations render this affection, but this is not just any affection.  This is the deep tender affection of Jesus Christ

Paul was saying an amazing thing in claiming the very compassionate mercy of Jesus was flowing in his heart for others.

Do we yearn over others in the deep feelings of Jesus?  Do we crave their best; covet every blessing and gift possible from the courts of Heaven for them?  Do we desire, beg, implore and hanker for the hand of God in their very souls? Do our hearts cry as God’s Spirit releases the feelings of Jesus in us for them?

Paul’s heart was in tempo and felt the pulse of Jesus’s heart.  This is what prayer persistence for the heart needs of others involves.

In the Memoirs of R.M. McCheyne he journals his cry:

“Oh, when will I plead, with my tears and inward yearnings, over others? Oh, compassionate Lord; give me to know what manner of spirit I am of! Give me Your gentle Spirit, that strives and cries for others.  I’m weary, of my prayerlessness, my want of cleaving to Christ.”

Catherin of Siena who wrote A Treatise of Prayer, in the 1300s, wrote:

“They made themselves infirm with those who were infirm, so that all who are frail might not be overcome with despair, and to give them more courage in exposing their infirmity, they would lend countenance to their infirmity and say, ‘I, too, am infirm with you!’

“They wept with those who wept, and rejoiced with those who rejoiced; and thus sweetly they knew to give every one his nourishment, preserving the good and rejoicing in their virtues, not being gnawed by envy, but expanded with the broadness of love for their neighbors.

“They drew the inadequate ones out of their inadequacy, themselves becoming deficient and infirm with them.  This is compassion; this is enduring love, for through love, we bare the pain of others.”

Jesus explains in Matthew 25:35-40 how He feels the hungers of others.

“I was hungry, and you gave me food; I was thirsty, and you gave me drink; I was a stranger, and you took me in; naked, and you clothed me; I was sick, and you visited me; I was in prison, and you came unto me”

FIVE AREAS OF ENTERING THE FEELINGS OF OTHERS:

THE NEED OF HUNGER AND THIRST

Are we feeling others’ feelings of emptiness?

THE NEED OF HOSPITALITY

Are we feeling others’ feelings of rejection, rebuff, refusal and strangeness?

THE NEED OF HOUSING

Are we feeling others’ feelings of devastation, exposure, and public humiliation (naked and unclothed)

THE NEED OF HEALTH

Are we feeling others’ feelings of sickness, and the sting of their overwhelming, crushing endless pain?

THE NEED OF HARASSMENT

Are we feeling others’ feelings of slavery as they’re punched and punished behind the prison bars of hopeless injustices?

In caring for others are we loving Christ and letting Jesus love others through our feelings and prayers for them?

Prayers Petitions v.9-11

Increased Love v.9    And this I pray, that your Love may abound yet more and more

Improved Learning

      Comprehension      in knowledge

      Capacity                 and in all judgment;

Insightful Living v.10

      Approval                 That ye may approve

      Advisability             things that are excellent;

 Indisputable Legitimacy

Sincere                    that ye may be sincere

Sensitive                 and without offence till the day of Christ

8. The Power of Joy In The Prison Of Pain in Philippians (part7) Prayers Pressure Philippians 1:7

8. The Power of Joy In The Prison Of Pain in Philippians (part7)

Prayers Pressure Philippians 1:7

Pressure and impossibility instructs us to turn from the finite to the infinite.  The hopelessness of pain, the bleakness of things that appear to never change and the loneliness of isolation from our dreams, these are our teachers the chauffeur’s of faith.

Everything is temporary and fluctuating.  The only things that last are God’s purposes and will.  It is the Lord’s choices that are worth our time and effort.  The prison of pain is our trainer in faith.

God draws us into the working out of His purposes and choices by prayer and He provokes us to prayer by pain.   Prayer is not pleading for God to do what He’s hesitant to do.  Prayer is entering into what our Lord has revealed in His Word as His eternal plans.

The Spirit prompts us to ask through His Word and then by His nudges in the daily pressures of life.

Nothing transpires outside of God’s will along with our response through prayer to His purposes.  We are called into fellowship to be co-workers with God by prayer.  Has God placed limits on Himself by our response to pray out His plan by our participation?  This is the mystery of abiding in Christ.

God is sovereign and will never be defeated, as He will raise up someone somewhere to enter in, in prayer for His glory and will to be achieved.  We don’t want to miss out by shriveling individually from pain and by not responding to the pressures of life.  The impossibilities are prompts, too lead to His presence and power for each detail of inadequacy around us.

Pray Concerned  Even as its right for me to think this of you all

There is a partnership and participation where prayer is concerned.  There’s a right way to think and sort through the diverse variations of our experience when things appear to polarize.  Daily occurrences can trip us up and land us into the opposite results.  We had hoped for a result but are bashed by opposing forces.  This can’t be allowed to drag us down but instead we need these harassing devices as a lift too pray on.

The Amplified renders this, it is right and appropriate for me to have this confidence and feel this way about you all, because you have me in your heart and I hold you in my heart as partakers and sharers one and all with me, of grace (God’s unmerited favor and spiritual blessing) This is true, both when I am shut up in prison and when I’m out in the defense and confirmation of the Good News of Christ.

Pray Compassionately BecauseI have you in my heart

Our affections are touched for others and we enter in to the feelings of Christ as we share in His heart in prayer.

Pray Committed         inasmuch as both in my bonds

There is an obligation we feel for others as we participate in there inner needs for Jesus.

Prayer Participation

  Pray Convincingly

     Endorse                  and in the defense

Encourage             and confirmation of the gospel,

Embrace                 you all are partakers of my grace.

Prayer is an involvement of sharing where the reality of faith validates all that is ours in the Lord as the Spirit of God corroborates an inner encouragement.  We embrace God’s compelling empowering grace as He lifts us up to Himself and holds us close in His love.

Heb. 13:8 Jesus Christ is the same, yesterday, today and forever.

We exist in fluctuating changeable circumstances inside and all around us.  Stuff is jumping at us within, without and times it appears to be everywhere.  We find our joy in meditating on Jesus and the calm of His changelessness.  He is constant, consistent and coherent as our reliable source.

In the puritan writing called the poor man’s portion we read:

“We come to Jesus, our Jesus, our Savior; He shall save His people from their sins.  He is Christ, God our Fathers Christ and our Christ.  He is the Anointed, the Sent, the Sealed of Jehovah, the same in His glorious person the same in His great salvation.  He is the same, looking back into everlasting, today, equally so through all the periods of time, forever the same looking forward to the eternity to come.  He is the same in His love, in the efficacy of His redemption, His blood to cleanse, His righteousness to justify.  He is the same in the fullness of supply of grace here and now and glory here after.”

In the middle of all our variableness and the frames of our unpredictability, in our fears, our doubts, faults, failings and faithlessness.  He is unchanging and stands faithful.  We can come to Jesus in our need.

7. The Power of Joy In The Prison Of Pain in Philippians (part6)

7. The Power of Joy In The Prison Of Pain in Philippians (part6)

Someone has saidDon’t let people drive you crazy when you know it’s in walking distance.”  There’s a bazillion things that can shatter our confidence or demolish our feel that things are not going to work out for the best.  Surging, irritating, outwardly relentless problems can drive us from the banks of success into the sea of failure.

David Brinkley wrote
“A successful person is one who can lay a firm foundation with the bricks that others throw at them.

Confidence is turning our back on looking at ourselves through others eyes.  It’s refusing to judge ourselves on what others say about us or how we feel they see us.  Confidence is looking strait through God’s eyes by a developing faith and relaxing rest in all He’s made us in Christ.

That doesn’t mean there isn’t pain in the weirdness of our interactions and social environment, but within these hurts there’s joy in the Lord.

Our joy is this confidence, not in ourselves, not in others, but in our God.  Confidence is faith.  To others, and to us often, faith appears intangible, unseen, imperceptible and often vague.  But God is unlimited and unrestricted so we prayer to God to undertake for us and through us in what may appear impossible.  This is how we embrace this confidence of faith.

When we get all hung up on our self, then faith becomes terminal.  And when faith ceases to prompt us to pray and confidence refuses to confide in Christ, then we sink and feel beat up by all our faults, hurts and insecurities.  The Lord has asked us out into the impossible, the sometimes intolerable and often the incredibly unreasonable.

Prayers Position Phil. 1:6

 Regarding Others

Pray Confidently    Being confident of this very thing,

Pray Competently that he which hath begun a good work in you

Pray Completely     will perform it until the day of Jesus Christ

We’re capable, not in our self but in the Lord.  His hand is on us.  We’re confident in “this very thing” as we learn more and more to look too Him and see His touches all around us.

The Psalmist spoke out of these traces; these brush strokes of God that are too open our eyes and cause us too marvel in His creation and wonder in our daily circumstances from morning to evening.  Even in our climate we see our Lord pouring out His love by refreshing us, filling us with His resources and designing our intrinsic requirements.  He renews us, repairs us and relaxes us with His reactions, His reaping and His remedies.

We can at times feel surrounded by gigantic problems and gargantuan pressures.  These issues are to move us from self-confidence to faith confidence in God.

Joshua and Caleb came back from spying on the promised real estate with the ten spies they’d dispatched with.  They went in to snoop it out, even though God had promised it to them.  The giant challenges shattered the confidence of the ten, but secured the confidence of Joshua and Caleb.  The ten were fixated on the problems and became obsessed with exaggerations and neurotic with fear.  Joshua and Caleb pleaded with the Israeli’s in Numbers 14:8 saying:

If the Lord delight in us, then He will bring us into this Land and give it to us.

This is not the “if” of possibility but the “if” of probability.  It could be rendered since the Lord delights in us.  The Lord does delight in us, He finds His pleasure in us and we are His joy because we’ve opened our heart to Jesus.

We’re not grasshoppers in the face of giants.  We’re not meager, miserable, inadequate insects in the shadow of hateful hulks.  The fact that terrorists surround us and are committed to our total destruction is not to be our focus of despair or mania of obsession.

David writes in Psalms 3:6

I will not be afraid of ten thousands of people that have organized against me, and that surround me at my every move.

THE GRANDEUR AND MAJESTY OF GOD 1 Chron. 29:11-12

THE GRANDEUR AND MAJESTY OF GOD 1 Chron. 29:11-12

1 Chron. 29:11-12 Yours, O LORD, is the greatness, and the power, and the glory, and the victory, and the majesty: for all that is in the heaven and in the earth is Yours, Yours is the kingdom, O LORD, and You are exalted as head above all, Both riches and honor come of You, and You reign over all; and in Your hand is power and might; and in Your hand it is to make great, and to give strength unto all.

God Is Sovereign         Yours, O LORD,

The Lord is proprietor and possessor of all

Deut.10:14  Behold, the heaven and the heaven of heavens is the LORD’S your God, the earth also, with all that therein is.

In Magnitude         is the greatness,

God is extreme in size, exquisite in quality, or exhaustless in quantity.  Greatness means magnification.  God’s name is great, His nature and attributes are great or incomparable and His actions and words are great.

Deut. 10:17 FOR the LORD your God is God of gods, and Lord of lords, a great God, and mighty,

Psa.145:3 Great is the LORD, and greatly to be praised; and his greatness is unsearchable.

Jesus lived and taught that all service leads to greatness; the lowlier the service the more exalted the greatness. We see God’s greatness exposed in that He pours His all out for us.

At the funeral of Louis XIV the great cathedral was packed with mourners paying final tribute to the king whom they all considered great. The room was dark, save for one lone candle, which illumined the lavish casket that held the mortal remains of the monarch.  At the appointed time, Massilion, the court preacher, stood to address the assembled people of France. As he rose, he reached from the pulpit and snuffed out the one candle that had been put there to symbolize the greatness of the king. Then from the darkness came just four words, “God only is great!”

Shakespeare wrote: “Be not afraid of greatness: some men are born great, some achieve greatness, and some have greatness thrust upon them.”

Boice said: “Pity the disciples! They were with true greatness in the person of the Lord Jesus Christ. He was great as only God is great. They were not. They had not been born great. They had not achieved greatness. They had not had greatness thrust upon them. Yet they wanted so much to be great.”

Eliphaz says in Job 5:8 I would seek unto God, and unto God would I commit my cause: Which doeth great things and unsearchable; marvelous things without number:

God’s greatness is demonstrated with every breath we breathe and in every moment of our existence but the greatness of His greatness is validated in Jn. 3:16

“CHRIST—THE GREATEST GIFT” is shown in the outline of an unknown writer.

THE GREATEST LOVER                    God

THE GREATEST DEGREE                so loved

THE GREATEST COMPANY            the world

THE GREATEST ACT                         that he gave

THE GREATEST GIFT                       his only begotten Son

THE GREATEST OPPORTUNITY that whosoever

THE GREATEST OPPORTUNITY believeth

THE GREATEST ATTRACTION     in him

THE GREATEST PROMISE             should not perish

THE GREATEST DIFFERENCE     but

THE GREATEST CERTAINTY        have

THE GREATEST POSSESSION       everlasting life

Overview 1 Chron. 29:11-12

God Is Sovereign        Yours, O LORD,

    In Magnitude           is the greatness,

    In Might                     and the power,

    In Matchlessness   and the glory,

    In Measure               and the victory,

    In Magnificence     and the majesty:

In Management      for all that is in the heaven

and in the earth is Yours

In Majesty                Yours is the kingdom, O LORD,

In Meaning              and You are exalted as head above all

God Is Savior

    In Money                   Both riches

In Measurement     and honor come of You,

    In Matchlessness

        In Position            and You reign over all;

        In Power                and in Your hand is power and might;

In Placing              and in Your hand it is to make great,

In Purpose            and to give strength unto all.

A FLY ON JESUS FACE

A FLY ON JESUS FACE

It was one of those flashes, your concentration has a lapse, and you are intent on one thing and miss the big picture.  I was sitting on my son-in-law and daughter’s couch, eating a salad.  In back of me, on the wall, was a contemporary rendering of Jesus’ face; an interesting artistic conception done by Damon Conklin, a local tattoo artist who runs Super-Genius Tattoo.  He’s alleged to be the most influential tattoo artist in Seattle with a shop on Pike Street near the Pike Street Market.

Someone remarked, “There’s a fly on Jesus’ face”. Another person chimed in on the same quip.  I didn’t turn to look; I was too into my salad.

Later I thought, “Wow, how can a fly be on Jesus face?”  There’s nothing more disturbing.  But the real question is, how prominent is His face to us, and are we focusing on the face or on the fly?

Ecclesiastes 10:1 states:

As dead flies cause even a bottle of perfume to stink, so a little foolishness spoils those with a reputation of wisdom and honor.

Dead flies, ick, this is a strange correlation. We may build up a reputation, others assume that we have some insight or wisdom on things, but one little miscue can ruin it all.  Just by a single slipup or lapse – and in that little burst of foolish expression the image of wisdom is tainted. Now others only see a fly. People will remember one tactless moment and forget years of admirable achievements.  All it takes is a tasteless, tacky gauche and we’re on our way to bankrupting our reputation.

“But Jesus doesn’t have flaws,” you say.  Yes, even though we characterize blame for every assumed defect in our planet on Him, is it a rational presumption?

In the face of Jesus are we focusing on His face or on a fly?

We may have a desire to see the Lord’s face but we are faced with what appears on the surface to be a plague of so many flies.  They fly in in the form of pesky things, devastating issues and anguishing disappointments.

The word “face” has an assortment of implications. In theology the phrase “the face of God” is a reference to the “presence of God

Many expressions and phrases also apply to “the face of God.” His face “shines” (Ps. 4:6), demonstrating good will and blessing. He sets His face against sinners (Lev. 17:10), and hides His face (Ps. 13:1).  His face is against or hid is an awkward phenomena, which is actually a backward analogy.  The reality is, we do the hiding.   The truth is, we persist in setting our face or life against His face so the reverse is insinuated.

Frequently, the word “face” is used not only as the presence of God but also His person as well.  In His person, or persona, all of the bounty of His characteristics are expressed; the privileges of His grace, favor, mercy, forgiveness and an awareness of His love and forgiveness.  But, if we’re delusional over the fly we slide into misconceptions of His face, misapprehensions of His presence, misconstructions of His purposes and misunderstandings of His love and quality of character.

When God sets His face against sinners the ultimate meaning here is really not God’s alleged turning.  We are the ones that turn our back on the face of Jesus.  We reject Christ, and refuse His offer of salvation.  Our purpose is a rebuff and a refusal of the face of Jesus. They are a snub to His gifts.

When you scrape back all the excuses people raise for rejecting Jesus it always ends the same. They are focusing on the fly instead of the face.  It is seeing Him as an absent God in place of seeing Him as the God who is here and present and extremely involved.

Does God seem to hide His face from us?  Yes, He does, in the aspect that we hide our face from Him. When we’re blaming God for hiding His face we may feel exhausted and depressed from problems, troubles, and extreme pressures.  Or it could be a chain of seemingly endless disappointments.  It could be a horde of flies.

There are things that go on, it seems, for year after year.  We stuff it away in a barrel of internal bitterness.  We feel the aggravation of discouragement over and over and invariably we blame it on God. All the while swatting at the flies or feeling God has left us.

We may feel driven to try a variety of desperate things to get relief.  Many of us just give up; we don’t have the energy to face the ruthless insistence of the condition we are in.  All we see is the fly.

It could be a physical condition, a financial problem that’s severe; a continual hopeless, unresolvable complication, or struggles and difficulties in a loved one’s life that just keeps cycling down to increasing wreckage and loss for them.

It may be a defiant loved one, a friend lost to alcoholism, drugs or some other draining vice.  It may be a situation at work, a demanding, unreasonable boss; a jealous, spiteful fellow worker, or worse, no work.  All we can see are flies and no face at all.

Is the face of God gone?  Has He withdrawn or is God just introverted?  Or worse then all that has God just disappeared?

No, we may think we are the experts.  We may have a view that our determination and perspective are defined from these assumed flies when God’s existence and presence is confusing in our lives.  On a bigger scale, the legion of flies in the world may incline us to speculate on God’s attendance or presumed absence.

The real problem is we’re free to focus on what we want and we’re free to ignore whatever details may exist.

Blaise Pascal, the French mathematician, physicist from the 1600s stated: “there is enough light for those who desire to see, and enough darkness for those of a contrary disposition.”

Paul Moser writes about the illusive God arguing: that God doesn’t just want us to see Him and know Him; He wants us to see and know Him in a particular way.  There is propositional knowledge.  Propositional means we have the content and meaning and we either accept it or reject it.

We know God exists, we accept the Jesus is God and that He has come and died for our sins and has risen and is alive.  We mentally accept that proposition or proposal. But is consenting to this proposition enough?

Then there is filial knowledge.  Filial is family knowledge.  This is to know Jesus is God personally.  This is seeing God’s face by faith.  This is having a personal relationship with Him.

We are free to reject Him or we are free to stay on the fringe with a propositional knowledge. But, a personal relationship means we have to bow to Jesus as Lord.

I see many claiming to be Christians but they presume on God’s grace.  The question is always why are they presumptive in speculating opinions and details that incline them on a periphery where they hedge and border.

We can’t presume God’s grace only, we’ve been asked to step deeper.  True faith is to depend on His grace.  Either we let God’s will be supreme or we demand that it’s our will that has to be supreme.  There is the rub.  If our will is highest and ultimate then God will let us live with our choice.  He hasn’t withdrawn, we have.  We’re seeing flies in place of His face and the consequence is all we can see are the flies and more flies.

The choice to presume is a decision to be blind.  The choice to depend is a determination to see His face, His presence and His grace.
